Facts about the Bronx:
  • The Bronx is considered to be the birthplace of both salsa and hip-hop music.
  • In 1997, the Bronx was designated an "All-America City" by the National Civic League.
  • The Bronx is the only borough of New York City physically attached to the US mainland.
  • The New York Yankees (located in the Bronx, of course) were once known as the Highlanders.
  • Currently, the Bronx is experiencing its biggest construction boom since WWII.
Important Latinos in the Bronx:
  • In 2009, Sonia Sotomayor became the first person Latino/Hispanic heritage to serve on the US Supreme Court. Justice Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican heritage and was born and raised in the Bronx.
  • Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias, a public health and human rights activist who was the first Latina to head the American Public Health Association, was on the faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.
  • Oscar Hijuelos, author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love and the first Hispanic-American novelist to win the Pulitzer Prize, attended Bronx Community College.
  • Dr. Richard Carmona, a New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent who was US Surgeon General from 2002 to 2006, also attended Bronx Community College.
  • Adolfo Carrión, Jr, Bronx Borough President (2001-2008), is a leading policy-maker and city planner who serves as President of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).
  • Herman Badillo was the first Puerto Rican to serve in the US House of Representatives (representing our 21st District in the South Bronx) and the first Puerto Rican Bronx Borough President.
