SAN DIEGO SITE LEADERSHIP TEAM
Gregory Talavera, MD, MPH, Principal Investigator of the San Diego HCHS/SOL Field Center, is a bilingual bicultural physician with over 12 years of experience in primary care and over 24 years working in the community at large. Currently, Dr. Talavera is a Professor of Public Health at the San Diego State University (SDSU) Graduate School of Public Health in the Division of Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion, and is a Volunteer Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at University of California in San Diego (UCSD). His current research interests explore the culture-specific beliefs that serve as barriers to chronic disease prevention and control in the Latino community.
John Elder, PhD, MPH, Co-Principal Investigator, has been on the Public Health faculty at SDSU since 1984. Elder's fluency in Spanish, and his extensive work in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, has shaped his work at SDSU. Dr. Elderís work in the United States spans obesity prevention, tobacco use, sun exposure, diet/nutrition, and physical activity. He has developed interventions for and conducted research in schools as well as in the mass media and in community-wide efforts, with particular attention to the health and related problems of Hispanics. Dr. Elder is also Adjunct Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Program Leader for Reducing Cancer Disparities at the UCSD School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Mexico.
Michael H. Criqui, MD, MPH, Co-Principal Investigator, is a Professor and Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, and Professor in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine and Director of the Preventive Cardiology Academic Award Program, all at the UCSD School of Medicine. Dr. Criqui's research focus is on cardiovascular epidemiology and preventive cardiology, including ethnic differences in cardiovascular risk.
Dr. Matthew Allison, MD, MPH, Co-Principal Investigator, is an Assistant Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD. He is trained in preventive cardiology and cardiovascular epidemiology and focuses his research on the measurement and epidemiology of subclinical atherosclerosis. Dr Allison is also involved in studies related to the prevention of various chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimerís disease.
Ana Talavera, MPH, Program Manager, is a bilingual bicultural native of Nicaragua. Ms. Talavera completed her undergraduate studies and her Masterís Degree in Public Health at SDSU and has over 15 years experience managing research projects at the Center for Behavioral and Community Health Studies. Ms. Talavera directs the day-to-day operations of the HCHS/SOL San Diego Field Center and ensures adherence to the study protocol.
Johanne Hernandez, RN, MBA, Clinic Manager, a native of Canada, brings to the study over 20 years of nursing and managerial experience. She earned her BS in Nursing from Laval University, Canada and her MBA at SDSU. Ms. Hernandez is responsible for the overall clinic management, supervises the study examiners, oversees participant flow; and oversees adherence to the study research protocol. Ms. Hernandez is fluent in Spanish, French and English.
Rosalinda Rodriguez, Recruitment Manager, has over six years of experience in multicultural community health education, program development, program management, participant recruitment and supervisory skills. She earned her BA in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside. Ms. Rodriguez oversees the recruitment of study participants and retention procedures and is responsible for ensuring adherence to the recruitment protocol by recruiters working in the community.
